More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera — April 20th, 2020
More Happy Than Not demonstrates a teenager’s journey to understanding oneself in terms of race, class and sexuality. Readers will observe the life of Aaron Soto as he re-discovers happiness from an unlikely source, his best friend Thomas. This book is undoubtedly one of my favourite reads! I have learned more about the hardships faced by those in the LGBTQ+ community. I must say, this book re-opens your eyes and transforms your perspective on society.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen — April 11th, 2020
This classic novel depicts the importance of female independence in a society in which gender discrimination is common. Elizabeth Bennet is subject to societal pressure and the expectation to marry when she meets Mr. Darcy, a prudent, affluent man. This book is composed of a variety of relevant themes. I have truly learned a great deal through this read.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas — April 1st, 2020
This young adult fantasy read explores the struggle between authority through the eyes of a young girl. Feyrie finds herself caught between two worlds—caring for her family in her human life and the life belonging to her lover, a High Fae. This book is one of my favourite young adult fantasy reads of all time! I enjoyed the storyline and loved the element of romance that was embedded into the thrilling plot.
Slammed by Colleen Hoover — June 24th, 2020
Following the unexpected death of a parent, this contemporary read explores the struggle to regain balance and happiness in life after a loss. Layken is a 18-year-old senior student experiencing difficulty adapting to the sudden changes within her life when she meets Will. They develop a strong connection that is halted by a sudden revelation. This series is one of my absolute favourites because the protagonist undergoes a great deal of character development and becomes an admirable role model.
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder — July 22nd, 2020
The fantasy, young adult book series Poison Study, provides deep insight into the politics at play during rebellions and revolutions. Yelena is in prison awaiting her execution date, when she receives an offer from the palace. She is asked to risk her life on a daily basis, by being the King’s food taster. This book series was an enjoyable read and enhanced my perspective on politics in our society.
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare — August 14th, 2020
This beautifully crafted novel addresses a forbidden love in the face of life threatening situations. Readers are drawn into the unique connection between Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn as they struggle to not only stay together, but also to save their shadowhunter world. This book is an emotional rollercoaster–and that’s a good thing! I felt everything the characters experienced and I highly recommend this read!
