Review

Two things I loved:

Interesting “Trial of Separation” Plot

  • Taylor Jenkins Reid tends to be creative in her storylines; she often experiments with something new. Hence, her original storyline of a married couple taking one year apart to restore their love! What an interesting idea! I don’t think I could ever do it though but interesting nonetheless.

Flashbacks

  • I enjoyed how Reid gave us an understanding of the foundation of the relationship with flashbacks to how it all started. It helped me understand how much the relationship has changed—for the worst. This piece of context was crucial to the ending of the book. If I didn’t know how much they loved each other before, I wouldn’t have thought much about their marital problems.

One thing I wasn't a fan of:

To be honest, this book fell a little flat. I had recently read Reid’s Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and that was epic—everything felt intentional and there were so many plot twists. It was powerful. In contrast, this felt light. It’s a good read for sure, just nothing remarkable this time!

I also had difficulty connecting to the characters: they were either really happy or miserable together. I felt like I was getting whiplash switching between these two moods.
