What Do You Enjoy Doing?

This question seems simple. 5 words. Straightforward. Concise. What else could you ask for? Yet, I think most would find it difficult to answer this one question. We live in a society where it feels like we are always going, going, and going—it is non-stop. Sometimes, we need to stop, breathe, and smell the roses. 

As summer rolls around, it is important to reflect on this question with the sudden increase in time that you have. Ask yourself: What do you like doing?

First off, let’s think about the things you already do. There may be something that has become a habit that you really enjoy. If so, let’s identify it with these questions:

1. What do you like like to do? Eg. Reading, watching shows, drawing, biking

2. Who do you like to do it with? Eg. Yourself, partner, friends, family

3. When do you like doing it? Eg. Morning, afternoon, evening, night

4. Where do you like doing it? Eg. Indoors, outdoors, your bedroom, beach, park

The “why” for the activity is the easy part! It should be something that contributes a positive feeling or emotion to your life. At the end of the day, we don’t want to live a mindless life, we want to live our life happily. 

But what if you don’t have something that you already do that you enjoy? That is okay! You have this summer to figure it out. Research different hobbies and activities and create your very own summer bucket list—how fun!

With your bucket list in hand, start planning dates with yourself or others to complete each activity. During this time, it is important to be open-minded! Use this summer to step outside of your comfort zone and be adventurous. 

To know who you are and what you like, you need to try different things. New experiences = more chances to learn about yourself. After completing a school year, you deserve it! You deserve this time carved out for yourself to ultimately be able to answer: What do you enjoy doing?
