Music & Studying

Do you ever sing along to your favourite tune in the background? Let me tell you: you are not alone! And guess what? Music can have many positive effects on our productivity!

Personally, when I’m writing papers, I enjoy listening to music without lyrics, but I like listening to any type of music when I’m solving math problems! It’s all about exploring and finding what works best for you 🌼

So, why listen to music when studying?

Music improves our mood

Music puts you in a better mood and promotes a positive mindset! This means, listening to music can help reduce stress from all the assignments we need to do for school. Research suggests that a good mood often results in improved learning outcomes 🎹 Studying can be stressful and it is perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed. Some relaxing music can help reduce this stress!

Music increases productivity

Also, studies have shown that music activates the left and right brain at the same time; the activation of both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory. Music helps stimulate your brain like how exercise stimulates your body! Listening to music allows us to focus during long study sessions and retain more information 🎵

Music motivates us!

Music can cause the brain to release dopamine, a hormone that regulates motivation and goal-oriented behaviour. Studies show listening to certain types of music may change our perception and happy music boosts our creativity!

However, there are definitely some downsides to listening to music when studying.

Certain types of music—loud or fast—and its lyrics can have negative impacts on our studies. These genres of music can decrease comprehension, which prevents us from studying effectively.

Should I listen to music during my study sessions? This is completely up to you! Here are five genres that can help you study 🎶

  1. Classical music

  2. Ambient music (Lofi)

  3. Instrumental jazz

  4. White noises

  5. Nature sounds

I find instrumental music helps me to study more effectively. Anyhow, music during study sessions may not work for everyone—and that’s okay! Important thing is to discover your unique learning style 💫
