Have you ever struggled to keep up with note-taking while your teacher is lecturing? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. The problem is, you may not be able to absorb all the information in such a short time when your ears and hands are multitasking.
So here are some tips I used to survive a year of Chemistry!
1. Practice taking brief notes
I’m telling you, you probably won’t have time to copy down everything from your teacher’s lectures. In my opinion, the most effective way to take notes is to take brief notes involving keywords. This allows you to listen to the lecture as well. Then, before you forget all the materials you have learned in class, make organized notes in your own words incorporating ideas from the lesson. Also, don’t be afraid of exploring the digital world of note-taking! Everyone has their own preferences, and I personally find typing faster than handwriting. However, I prefer studying using a physical copy of my notes so I often print them out.
2. Review!
At the end of each class, we are briefly overcome with relief. Now, how long will it take for us to forget everything we’ve learned in class? Without reviewing the materials you’ve learned in previous classes, you may walk into the next Chemistry class forgetting everything you’ve learned! Make sure to review and do practice questions to refresh your memory :)
3. Lab activities
There is a reason why we do lab activities. It can be a pain to read through the procedures and lab preparation, cleaning up, and of course, writing lab reports. However, taking opportunities presented in lab class can help you remember important key ideas you need for tests. Labs connect those main ideas you’ve learned in class to real life applications and consequently, assist you in the understanding of concepts.
Ask Questions
Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Asking questions will not only help you understand the concepts better, but also allows you to build a relationship with your teacher. Therefore, make sure to clarify big ideas with your teachers before upcoming tests and finals!
Online Sources
We have the internet as an accessible source! You can find provincial exams, practice tests, assignments, videos, worksheets and pre-made cue cards online. Use the internet to your advantage!
Don’t forget to revise regularly and plan ahead for the upcoming quizzes, tests, and exams. Good luck!
