Every math teachers’ favourite phrase is, “The key to being successful in math is to understand the question and be able to apply it to your own situations you may come across in life.” Now, the question is, how? All they tell you is what to do and not actually how to do it. Teachers, right?
But don’t worry, because I’m here to tell you all about “How to Math 101” !
1. Practice Questions
Yes. Practice, practice, practice. There’s a saying “practice makes perfect” for a reason. I hate to break it to you, but there’s no shortcut or an easy way out when it comes to Math. However, you’ll be missing out if you only focus on the textbook questions because often, your teachers will give you separate assignments, quizzes, or practice tests with questions that will most likely be on your unit test.
2. Notes
The reason why notes are essential in your math class is because you need to first understand the material before tackling questions. This way, you’ll actually know what you are doing instead of copying the answers from the answer key (don’t worry, we’ve all been there). As you organize your study notes in your own words, you will not only have the right to brag about how hard-working you are, but it will also be there to refresh your memory. When you’re making your study notes, remember to summarize only the main points you need to know and draw diagrams because it will help you to understand the material better.
3. Cue Cards
For the most part, flashcards will not always be necessary for studying for a math test. The formula sheet will often be given by your teacher and you will be able to learn the formulas that are most often used just by doing practice questions. However, flashcards can indeed be useful in important definitions and the unit conversions that you will need to know for your test.
Ask Questions
Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Asking questions will not only help you understand the concepts better, but also allows you to build a relationship with your teacher. Therefore, make sure to clarify big ideas with your teachers before upcoming tests and finals!
